I work live sound at concert venues, and what you said about listening to songs you’re familiar with to try out equipment is also a popular sound engineer’s trick to tune and adjust a PA to be as transparent and clear as possible. It achieves a different goal, but it comes from the same place as using your ears as a tool since that’s where the music’s ultimately going anyway.
